My Miele Washing Machine Does Not Start

My Miele Washing Machine Does Not Start Infographic

I remember one of my customers who was a lawyer called us because her machine won’t start. I arrived at her flat and she informed me that the fuse had already been changed.

I removed the washing machine plug from the socket and put it in another socket, the lights came on and the machine started to let water into the machine.

I felt so sorry for my customer going to the laundrette for months whilst there was nothing wrong with her washing machine all along.

The solution to your Miele washing machine problem might be easier than you think.

These are 18 possible reasons why your Miele washing machine won't start.

☆ REMEMBER TO PULL OUT THE PLUG FROM THE SOCKET BEFORE YOU START DO NOT WORK WITH LIVE ELECTRICITY PULL THE PLUG REMAIN SAFE ☆

Possible cause 1 - Fuse box

The most common problems are the obvious ones. The reason your Miele washing machine isn’t starting could be simply the switch in the fuse box has been switched off. Make sure you check the main fuse box, ensure all the switches are up.

Possible cause 2 - Socket switch

1. Check that the socket switch is on.

2. Check that the plug is fully pushed into the socket.

3. Check to see if the socket is working by testing it with a working appliance.

4. Check the fuse in your plug. Use a fuse from a working appliance, make sure it's a brown 13-amp one.

This problem reminds me of one of my customers who couldn’t use her washing machine for 3 months. I arrived at her flat and she told me that the fuse had already been changed and that she's a lawyer so she's not stupid.

I removed the washing machine plug from the socket and put it in another socket, the lights came on and the machine started to let water into the machine. I felt so sorry for my customer going to the laundrette for 3 months while her washing machine was ok all along.

I also remember another occasion when a customer told me “It's not the fuse because I changed it”, only for me to find out that he had put a 5-amp fuse in the plug which blew again.

The washing machine worked fine when I put the 13-amp fuse in.

Be sure to remove the top of the machine, turn on your multimetre and turn it to the resistance setting ohms ♎.

5. Take the plug and put the red probe on the live pin of the plug. Put the black probe on the brown wire outlet of the electric filter inside your machine. See if you get a reading, do exactly the same for the neutral pin of the plug, and again if you get a reading you know there's continuity, meaning no break in the wiring from the plug to the outlet of the electric filter.

Possible cause 3 - Check that the machine has been switched on, and the door has been closed properly.

1. Check to see if the door handle is broken.

2. Check to see if the hinges are fitted straight, that the door is aligned properly.

3. Check to see the start button has been pressed.

4. Check that the child lock is not on. This particular problem is quite common, as many a time customers are not aware that this feature exists, never mind being aware that they've put the child lock on unaware!

5. Complete a resistance test on the door interlock.

Possible cause 4 - Check for blockages

According to our experience, over 70% of all washing machine repair calls that are associated with the washing machines not draining will be related to a blockage in the pump or a block in the drain hose. So, if your Miele washing machine does not drain, the chances are that there's something lodged in the pipe or the pump.

1. Complete a resistance test on the pump.

2. Check to see if the pump filter is blocked.

3. Check to see if the sump is blocked.

4. Check to see if the sump hose is blocked.

5. Check to see if the drain hose is blocked.

6. Check to see if the spigot under the sink is blocked.

Conclusion

If your washing machine is not starting, do not panic - the problem could be a simple fix. Remember to test and check each of the above steps. Don’t forget safety first!
